Filipino Community in Chongqing Bonds over Patintero in National Heritage Month
Chongqing, 28 May 2023 – On the occasion of the Philippines’ National Heritage Month, the Philippine Consulate General in Chongqing spearheaded a community-based celebration by way of the screening of Mihk Vergara’s film titled Patintero: Ang Alamat ni Meng Patalo at its newly-opened multipurpose hall on 28 May 2023.
In her opening remarks, Consul General Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo explored the celebration’s theme of change and continuity. She offered suggestions on how Filipinos overseas could preserve their cultural heritage by incorporating in their daily grind the elements that contribute to their national identity such as Filipino food, music, and films. Consul General Mayo also encouraged the members of the Filipino community, mostly teachers and engineers, to share with their foreign peers stories from home, especially those that highlight Filipino festivities, culture and family values. She enjoined them to dig deeper into their Filipino culture and stay rooted to their national heritage.
Filipino children in the audience visibly enjoyed the featured film which they found relatable. During the open forum that followed the film showing, they appreciated lessons imparted by the film’s four young protagonists. Their nostalgic parents, on the other hand, observed continuities in Filipino values cultivated by the beloved children’s game despite its modern rendition in the film.
“The way we view and experience our heritage in the face of our constantly changing environment calls for room to allow our heritage to grow over time and with us. Here in Chongqing, amidst the hustle and bustle of an ultra-modern mega city, the Consulate would like for all of us to refresh our perspectives and appreciation for our Filipino culture and identity. Let us resolve on a daily basis to pass on both to our children,” Consul General Mayo said.
The film showing was undertaken by the Philippine Consulate General in partnership with the Film Development Council of the Philippines. END
