PH CONSUL GENERAL MEETS WITH YUNNAN FOREIGN AFFAIRS OFFICE, SEEKS MUTUALLY-BENEFICIAL COOPERATION IN COMMON PRIORITY AREAS

25 February 2022, Kunming – On her first official visit to Kunming, Yunnan Province, Consul General Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo paid a courtesy call on Ms. Yang Mu, the Yunnan Provincial Foreign Affairs Office (FAO) Director General, this morning at the FAO Building.

Director General Yang provided an overview of Yunnan Province, highlighting its rich biological and cultural diversity, as well as its economic achievements in the past years, including eradicating absolute poverty in 2021. She also underlined Yunnan’s strategic role and unique advantage as China’s gateway to ASEAN.

Consul General Mayo, for her part, thanked the FAO for assistance in matters concerning the Filipino community in Yunnan. She highlighted important milestones in PH-CN bilateral relations and suggested ways forward to contribute to the bilateral partnership especially in the areas of (a) environment and biodiversity protection, (b) tourism, cultural, and heritage preservation and promotion, (c) health sciences and healthcare, (d) green development and energy, and (e) agricultural technology. Noting that these areas are Yunnan’s priority areas as well, DG Yang welcomed the Consul General’s views.

Consul General Mayo was accompanied by Vice Consul Adrian G. Miras and Post’s interpreter, Timothy Wong. On the other hand, Director General Yang was joined by Deputy Director General Xia Jianfeng, Director for Consular Affairs Yang Zejuan, Director for Southeast Asian Affairs Chen Rongjie, and Secretary General of the Yunnan Provincial People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries Peng Shaoyun.

Yunnan Province is situated in Southwest China. With a land area of 394,000 sq. km. and a population of 47 million, the province is a gateway to Southeast and South Asia. In 2021, Yunnan’s GDP amounted to around USD 429 billion. Philippine trade with Yunnan was valued at USD 370 million in 2021, according to its Foreign Affairs Office. END
