CHONGQING, 20 August 2018. – Jude Steven Candelaria and Jarred Sueno Luzada, students of the Philippine Science High School-Bicol Campus, received silver award for their scientific project entitled “REDetect: Automated Saltwater Quality Monitor for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) Detection” during the 33rd China Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest (CASTIC) held from 14 to 20 August 2018 in Chongqing, China.

Their scientific project, which was submitted as an entry in the Environmental Science and Engineering Category, presents practical and affordable solution for the early detection of algal blooms (red tide) through a device that uses a set of sensors for pH level, temperature, and light intensity to measure and predict HABs. The device likewise offers comprehensive information through a web application capable of being accessed anywhere. This innovative device aims to provide an alternative method to conventional devices that are either too costly or likely to endanger wildlife.

The 33rd CASTIC was jointly hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Ministry of Education and other government departments and organizations. The contest is designed for young scientists from Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa, and the Americas to compete and showcase their innovative scientific projects. This year 88 scientific projects were featured in 13 different categories with about 207 participants coming from 45 countries and regions.

Consul General Crescente R. Relacion attended the launching of the event held on 15 August 2018 at Wyndham Hotel, Yubei District, during which he had the opportunity to personally welcome the two young Filipino scientists and their teacher, as well as offer words of encouragement to them before the competition officially started.
