The Philippine Consulate General hosted a well-attended diplomatic reception on 13 June 2016, with Ms. Zhang Ling, Vice-Chairman of the Chongqing Municipality’s Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), as Guest of Honor. Consul General Olivia V. Palala began her remarks by expressing gratitude for the presence of Chinese officials from the Foreign Affairs Office of Chongqing and from the Chongqing Economic and Trade Commission, members of the consular corps in Chongqing, Chinese businessmen and members of Filipino community in the event, and citing the theme for this year’s Independence Day celebration: Kalayaan 2016: Pagkakaisa, Pag-aambagan at Pagsulong. She also briefly mentioned the accomplishments of the Aquino administration, particularly the progress it has made in the economic field. On her part, Vice-Chairman Zhang congratulated the Philippines on its celebration of Philippine independence. She mentioned the friendly relations between the Philippines and China and cited the Consul General’s activities and efforts in promoting them. The event was highlighted by the lecture of Professor Felipe De Leon, Jr., Chairman of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts, on “What Makes Filipinos Filipino?” About 90 guests from various sectors attended the event. Many of the guests who listened in rapt attention to the lecture were foreigners, among whom were Consul General Takashi Hoshiyama of Japan, Her Majesty’s Consul General Tina Redshaw of the UK, Consul General Sergio Maffettone of Italy and the expatriate General Managers of various 5-star hotels in Chongqing, as well as several Chinese businessmen who have interests in the Philippines.
