Former President Fidel V. Ramos was one of the speakers during the opening ceremony of the 2012 Education Forum for Asia (EFA) Annual Conference that was held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China on 21-23 September 2012. The conference theme was "Asian Education: Towards a More Prosperous and Better Future".
Former President Ramos was one of the initiators of EFA which was established in 2003 with a vision to promote a more relevant, more dynamic, higher quality of education in Asia. In his welcome speech, he spoke of education as a "Weapon of Mass Upliftment" for the knowledge society of the future and said that learning should be a life-long process.
Six parallel sessions were held during the conference, with Philippine Consul General Ma. Amelita C. Aquino speaking in the session on "International Exchange and Cooperation: Regional Mobility of Teachers and Students".
The Conference brought together about 500 delegates from China and other countries.
The Philippine delegation led by former President Ramos was composed of 17 University Presidents, Vice Presidents, Administrators and Deans from Philippine Normal University, University of the East, ICCT Colleges, National University, Development Academy of the Philippines, De La Salle University, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Centro Escolar University, Arellano University, Lyceum of the Philippines and Technological Institute of the Philippines.
