Kunming, Yunnan Province, 11 November 2023 – In a curtain raiser to the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) on 25 November 2023, the Philippine Consulate General in Chongqing spearheaded today a discussion on the significance of the annual event with members of the Filipino community in Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan Province, China.

In his presentation, Vice Consul and Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point Officer Adrian G. Miras explained the societal and economic impacts of VAW in order to deepen community awareness of the topic.  Emphasizing that a VAW-free Philippines requires a whole-of-nation effort, the Consulate General girded the talk with an ASEAN Secretariat video showing Violence Throughout the Life Cycle and ended the same with the Philippine Commission on Women’s Prayer to End Violence Against Women.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs has a long history of leading the global agenda on gender equality.  Gender-based violence being the anti-thesis of gender equity, the Philippine Consulate General in Chongqing stands united with the Philippine Foreign Service to support the annual 18-day Campaign in pursuit of a VAW-Free Philippines,” Philippine Consul General Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo remarked.

The 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women is annually observed from 25 November to 12 December pursuant to Proclamation No. 1172, series of 2006. END
